PainMatcher® can do up to three measurements at once.
Somatosensory threshold – the faintest stimulation the patient can feel.
Pain threshold – the weakest amount of stimulation the patient considers painful.
Pain matching – the stimulation the patient considers as intense as his/her own physical pain.
The patient holds the instrument in a pincer grasp between the thumb and index finger of one hand. The fingertips press against the electrodes on the instrument, and anyone with complete sensory capabilities and full motor ability in their hands can use PainMatcher®. The patient starts and interrupts stimulation by gripping or releasing the electrodes. PainMatcher® is based on a random variation of the time it takes to increase stimulation. That way, the measurement is determined only by what the patient feels, not how long the measurement takes. Patients feel that their pain is being taken seriously and that the measurement gives accurate results for further diagnosis or treatment.
